We’re a home-based bakery offering an assortment of homemade classic cakes to customers in Maryland. A Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business, we make our cakes from scratch. Our business has been very successful through word-of-mouth sales alone. Here’s how we started.

Biography

Dana Anderson, Owner

Dana is the CEO and owner of Classic Desserts by Dana, LLC. She prepares all of her desserts right from her home kitchen located in Annapolis, Maryland. Her passion for baking and hospitality service began when she was 8, baking for family members and during special gatherings.


She got her passion from her paternal grandmother, Ethel Anderson, who was always hosting events with several homemade dishes. Dana started out baking at home in her parent’s kitchen. On Sundays after church, she would go to one of her close relative’s houses to bake cakes.

Even when serving in the U.S. Air Force, Dana continued baking cakes for several gatherings. She’s now a retired veteran for more than 23 years. Dana worked as a government contractor for 4.5 years after retiring from the military in 2013.


In late 2017, she resigned to focus and complete her master’s degree in information technology with a specialization in information assurance. She completed this degree in 2020.


The information technology field has always been Dana’s passion. She has had experience working in this area while serving in the military. After completing her degree, she had initially planned to work in the information technology field but felt herself being drawn in another direction.


During the pandemic, she began cooking and baking more. She feels fulfilled preparing meals and baking desserts for others. It was not until February 2021 that she went with her first passion and pursued entrepreneurship in baking traditional cakes and desserts.


Classic Desserts by Dana, LLC was founded in March 2021 and officially approved as a Maryland Cottage Food Business in April 2021. Under the Maryland Cottage Food Law, our business is restricted to in-person and online sales only in the state of Maryland.


Dana’s plans include expanding her business by becoming a commercial retailer so that she will be able to offer her products outside of the state of Maryland and more dessert selections in retail stores. Starting as a Maryland Cottage Food Business is a stepping stone for Dana to promote her products so that they can reach others through word-of-mouth.


This business owner also has a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certification which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Conference for Food Protection (CFP).
